Bruins Referees

Bankstown Basketball Association is home to one of the largest and most successful referees’ programs in New South Wales. With over 190 officials and a regular training and development program, Bankstown referees represent the Association at all levels of the game, from NBL and WNBL, through the various ABA and State Leagues, down to Sydney Junior Championships.

Bankstown referees also service over 150 junior and senior domestic games per week, ranging from Under 10 junior games through to Division 1 senior competition.

Bankstown Basketball Association employs a full-time Referees’ Development Manager, to manage the program. This involves the recruitment of new officials and the development of existing officials, as well as the rostering and administration of the program.

If you’re interested in learning how to referee, please contact Peter Baxter on 02 9707 1866 Ext 6 or peter@bruinsbasketball.com.au

More information

Are there Junior Referee Courses?

Junior Referees School (for ages 12 to 16) teaches the basics of refereeing – on-court positions, calling fouls and violations, and administering the game – in a classroom situation, and then you get to go out on court in one of our various competitions to learn the practical side of refereeing.Junior Refs’ School runs for approximately 8 weeks of 90 minute sessions, which involve class teaching and on-court sessions. Currently referee school runs twice a year on either a Monday afternoon or Saturday morning. The cost to enrol in Junior Refs’ School is $40.00, which includes: FOX40 whistle, rule book, and notes for the course.

Are there Adult Referee Courses?

We run regular basic level training when our competitions commence, which teaches the basics of refereeing – on-court positions, calling fouls and violations, and administering the game. We then take you out on the courts over the next few weeks and get you refereeing games with experienced partners.. To get involved, email us to place your name on the list for either our Senior Beginners course or the Junior Referees School or give us a call on 02 9707 1866.
